ABOUT Chana Daal Kheer RECIPE

Traditional mangalorean recipe for kheer. Prepared with coconut milk and jaggery.

Ingredients Serving: 9

  1. 1&1/2 cups chana daal.
  2. 1/2 kg jaggery. Melted.
  3. 5-6 pods cardamom.
  4. 1 tsp salt.
  5. 2 fresh grated coconut.
  6. 3 tbsp maida or cornflour.
  7. Few cashew nuts and sliced almonds.

Instructions

  1. Coconut extract - Add grated coconut into a grinder and add a little water and grind. strain. Repeat twice or more as needed and extract the juice. First extract will be thick. keep it separately.
  2. Wash and take daal in a pressure cooker. add water enough to cook the daal. Cook for 2 whistles.Turn off the heat.
  3. When the daal is cooked, transfer into a cooking vessel and add melted , strained jaggery. And mix. Add salt as per taste...
  4. Next add thick coconut milk and let it cook. Using second or third coconut milk extract make a paste of flour.you can use rice flour or maida. usually soaked rice is ground to make a paste. Make a lump free paste adding little coconut milk. add this slowly into the daal and immediately mix it.
  5. Kheer will thicken as you add the flour paste. Add roasted almond and cashew, crushed cardamom powder. Mix well and cook till it boils. You may add the left over coconut extract to adjust consistency.
