ABOUT Star Gooseberry Relish RECIPE

A delicious sweet and tangy relish which almost pairs with everything from pulaos,rotis,dosa or to your oatmeal.You will not stop when you have a bite.These star gooseberries are grown locally and are too tart. Loaded with nutrients right from the leaves to the fruit,it is slowly disappearing and is rare to find in cities now.Try this relish and you will start loving it.

Ingredients Serving: 10

  1. Country Gooseberry/Star Gooseberry/Naatu nellikai - 2 cups
  2. sugar - 1 cup
  3. water - 1 cup
  4. elaichi/cardamom - 3


  1. Wash the ripe berries.
  2. Add the berries in a pot and add water enough to cover it.
  3. Boil it until it gets soft.
  4. Discard the water and while hot roughly mash it with a spoon.
  5. In a heavy bottomed deep pan,add the mashed berries ,split cardamom along with half cup of sugar and little water and cook in low heat.
  6. Stir it occasionally as it may scorch at the bottom.
  7. When all the sugar gets dissolved,stir it so that the sugar caramelises to give a nice color.
  8. When all the water gets evaporated,add the remaining sugar and little water.
  9. Stir it well until it gels together and no water remains.
  10. Allow it to cool and transfer to sterlised containers for longer shelf life.
  11. Serve with pulaos or roti.
