Doi Elish (Hilsa with Curd)

Ingredients to make Doi Elish (Hilsa with Curd)

  • Hilsa fish: 6 pieces
  • curd: 100 gms
  • Green chili: 8-10 pieces
  • mustard seeds: 4 teaspoons
  • Black cumin seeds: ¼ teaspoon
  • turmeric powder: ½ teaspoon
  • mustard oil: 1 cup (150 gms)
  • salt to taste

How to make Doi Elish (Hilsa with Curd)

  1. Wash the fish thoroughly then marinate it with turmeric powder and salt before cooking.
  2. Make a paste of mustard seeds and 2-3 pieces of green chillies.
  3. In a bowl, mix the curd and the mustard paste then add the turmeric powder.
  4. In a fry-pan, heat the mustard oil and fry the fish for 30 seconds.
  5. In the same oil, add the black cumin seeds to temper and let them splutter.
  6. Turn the heat to low then add the curd and mustard paste along with a 1/4 cup of water and salt.
  7. Stir for a minute and add the hilsa along with the rest of the green chillies.
  8. Now pour a little water and stir it once.
  9. Cook in low heat with the lid on for about 6-7 minutes.
  10. Remove the pan from the flame when the hilsa is well cooked.
  11. Serve hot with rice.
