ABOUT Tomato pappu/ dal RECIPE

This dish is from southern part of India and is prevalent in most homes in Andhra. I absolute love this thick flavorful dal with some steamed rice.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Toor dal - 1/2 cup
  2. Chopped tomatoes - 2
  3. Garlic cloves - 6-7
  4. Green chillies - 2
  5. Dry red chillies - 2
  6. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  7. Jeera seeds - 1/4 tsp
  8. Curry leaves - 10-12
  9. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  10. Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  11. Ghee/ refined oil
  12. Salt as per taste


  1. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked toor dal, chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder along with green chillies and half the garlic cloves crushed.
  2. Boil the the dal and mash it with the help of a masher.
  3. To make the tadka, heat ghee/ refined oil. Add the mustard seeds, jeera seeds, dry red chillies followed by curry leaves and then rest of the garlic cloves chopped.
  4. Once they splutter and color, add the tadka to the boiled dal.
  5. Pour some more water, salt and red chilli powder into the Dal. Cook till it reaches required consistency. Add some more ghee and serve.
