Dal Chilli Rasam

Ingredients to make Dal Chilli Rasam

  • 1/4 cup toor dal
  • 4 medium ripe tomatoes
  • 8 to 10 green chilli
  • Handful coriander leaves
  • curry leaves a sprig
  • 5 garlic pods
  • mustard 1 tsp
  • ghee 1 tsp
  • 1 small onion
  • jaggery (optional) - 1 tsp
  • 1/2 lime juice

How to make Dal Chilli Rasam

  1. In a cooker add washed dal, tomatoes and green chilli. Add in sufficient water and pressure cook it for 4 whistle or till it's cooked.
  2. Once the pressure is released, open the lid. Take out tomatoes and green chilli into a jar and blend it. The dal will be cooked. Just mash it once (if it's under done).
  3. In a pan, add little ghee. When heated add mustard seeds. Once it splutters add in garlic. Fry till brown.
  4. Add in curry leaves, chopped onions and fry till onions are done. Put the ground tomatoes and green chilli paste. Fry for a minute.
  5. Now add the dal. Mix well. Add enough water to reach the rasam consistency. Boil it.
  6. Add salt, jaggery and boil for a couple of minutes. Add in coriander leaves, lime juice. Check for the seasoning.
  7. Serve hot with rice and ghee.

My Tip:

Adjust green chilli as per taste. This recipe is medium spicy. Jaggery is optional. subsitute lime juice with tamarind.
