ABOUT Cholar Dal ( Chana Dal With Ccoconut ) RECIPE

It's Bengal's famous traditional dish. Very tasty and delicious. It goes well with green peas kachori, puri , pulav and with plain rice as well.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Chana dal (lentils ) - 1 cup
  2. Coconut - 1/2 cut into pieces
  3. Hing - 1/2tsp
  4. Ginger paste -1 tsp
  5. Turmeric powder -1 tsp
  6. Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
  7. Cumin powder -1 tsp
  8. Sugar - 2tsp
  9. Salt
  10. Mustard oil
  11. Green chillies - 2/3
  12. Cumin seeds -1/2tsp
  13. Dry roasted cumin seeds along with garam masala - 1 tsp
  14. Ghee


  1. Pressure cook the lentils till it's soft with salt and turmeric powder.
  2. Take a pan. Add mustard oil.Bring it to a smoking point and then reduce the gas.
  3. Fry the coconut pieces till brown and keep aside.
  4. Add mustard oil to the pan and follow the same procedure as in step no.2
  5. Add cumin seeds, Hing ginger paste and sauté it.
  6. Add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder and cumin powder. Sauté.
  7. Now add the boiled dal. Keep mixing. Add the slit green chillies.
  8. Add the sugar and roasted masala.
  9. Add a dollop of ghee.
  10. Garnish with fried coconut and serve with Bengali Luchi or steamed rice.
