It is a Bengali recipe. Bitter gourd is cooked with coconut and poppy seeds. Bitter gourd is full of fibres and vitamins, but often we think twice before we cook it because of its bitter taste, specially kids don't like them at all, so here I am presenting this simple dish which is not bitter at all. Try this dish, this is very simple and yummy. Everyone will like it and eat it without knowing that it is Karela!!

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Bitter gourd 2 medium size
  2. Coconut grated 1/2 cup
  3. Poppy seeds 2 tbsp
  4. green chillis 4
  5. Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  6. salt as per taste
  7. Black mustard seed 1/4 tsp

Instructions

  1. Cut the bitter gourds in medium thick rings
  2. In a bowl add 1 1/2 cups water , add a pinch of salt , immerse the bitter gourd rings in water for 30 minutes.
  3. Mix together poppy seeds and coconut, add little water, 2-3 tbsp keep them aside for 45 to 1 hour
  4. Now add 2 green chillies and make fine paste
  5. The fine paste of coconut, poppy seeds and green chillies with little water
  6. Strain bitter gourd rings
  7. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan add the bitter gourd rings
  8. Add salt as per taste
  9. Add turmeric powder also, fry both the sides until light red
  10. Like this , now keep them aside
  11. In the same pan heat 2 tbsp oil , splutter black mustard seeds
  12. Add green 2 slit green chillies , saute for 30 seconds in low heat
  13. Add turmeric powder
  14. Add salt
  15. Add the coconut paste
  16. Saute till all the water dries up in medium heat
  17. Now add fried bitter gourd rings
  18. Add 1/2 cup water
  19. Cover and cook until the gravy turns thick
  20. Check salt, you can add 1 tsp sugar at this time.
  21. Take off heat, serve hot with rice or roti
