ABOUT Gongura Thokku (No Onion No Garlic) RECIPE

Its no onion no garlic version of gongura that goes well with rice and dosa. Gongura or sorrel leaves or pulicha keerai is very famous in south india for its medicinal value. Especially in Chennai the demand for gongura is more. We have to do advance order to get a bunch.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Gongura leaves 1 bunch
  2. Sesame oil 2 tbsp + 1tsp
  3. Channa dal 2 tbsp
  4. Urad Dal 1 tbsp
  5. Coriander Seeds 2 tbsp
  6. Dry Red chilies 5
  7. Jeera/Cumin Seeds 1 tsp
  8. Black Pepper 1 tsp
  9. Methi 1/2 tsp
  10. Tamarind 1/4 tsp (optional)


  1. Heat 1tbsp Sesame oil in Non stick pan. Saute Channa dal and Urad dal until golden brown
  2. Add Coriander seeds, jeera, black pepper, methi and dry red chilies. Saute until aromatic
  3. Cool the mixture completely. Add salt and and Grind to fine powder
  4. In same pan, heat 1tsp Sesame oil, saute gongura leaves for 5 minutes on low flame. Cool the leaves, add tamarind if required and grind the leaves.
  5. In same pan, heat 1tbsp sesame oil,add ground powder and gongura paste. Saute for 5 minutes on low flame. Serve with Curd Rice
