ABOUT Kalkandu Bath / Sugar Candy Rice RECIPE

It is very simple tasty rice made especially with rice cooked in milk. It is very quick rice prepared as prasadam for god. Making Sweet Pongal takes time but it takes less than 5 mins when you have cooked rice at home. Traditionally kalkandu bath is prepared with rice and moong dal cooked in milk. Sweet candy is added to enhance the taste with the flavours of Cardamon, nutmeg and Saffron.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Cooked Raw rice 1 cup
  2. Milk required
  3. Sugar Sweet Candy / Kalkandu required
  4. Saffron pinch
  5. Nutmeg pinch
  6. cardamon powder
  7. For seasoning Ghee
  8. Cashew
  9. dry grapes


  1. I have used left over rice to prepare this sweet rice. Traditionally 1 cup raw rice and 1 tbsp moong dal are roasted and pressure cooked in milk instead of water. The rice is mashed completely.
  2. Pour boiled milk on rice and cook on low flame
  3. Add Cardamon, Saffron and pinch of Nutmeg
  4. Add sugar candy and boil for 10 minutes on low flame. Gently mash rice.
  5. Add Seasoning made with Ghee, Cashew and dry grapes
  6. Add tutti fruitti as topping and serve chilled
