It is a nice tea-time snack. I got to learn this from my mother.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Chana dal( split bengal gram)- 1cup
  2. Onion( chopped)- 1/2 cup
  3. Ginger(grated)- 1/2 tspn
  4. Green chillies(chopped)- 1
  5. Coriander leaves- 1tspn
  6. Mint leaves- 1tspn
  7. Curry leaves- 1/2tspn
  8. Turmeric​ powder- 1/4th tspn
  9. Salt to taste
  10. Oil for deep frying
  11. For serving
  12. Green chutney or tomato sauce

Instructions

  1. Clean, wash and soak the chance dal in a deep bowl in enough water for 2 hours. Drain well.
  2. Keep 2tbspn aside of the chance dal. Bend the rest chance dal in a mixer to a coarse mixture without adding any water.
  3. Transfer the mixture into a deep bowl. Add all the remaining ingredients.
  4. Heat oil in a deep pan for frying.
  5. Pick up small portions,shape them to small balls and flaten on a greased sheet or even using hands.
  6. Now drop the vadas into hot oil, you can add 3-4 vadas in one batch, depending on the size of the pan.
  7. Flip them around, fry till golden, drain then on kitchen tissues.
  8. Repeat making vadas and frying till you finish the ground mix.
  9. Serve hot dal vadas with green chutney or tomato sauce.
