Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. cup rava (sooji or semolina )
  2. ½ cup dahi - (yogurt or dahi)
  3. 1  pinch baking soda 
  4. 2.5 to 3 spoon - water
  5. 1 green chili, chopped (hari mirch)
  6. frying the cashews as required
  7. Salt
  8. teaspoon oil
  9.  inc 3 teaspoon ghee or oil for roasting
  10. for tempering rava idli:
  11. Rai/ mustard seed - 1teaspoon
  12. Oil- 1 teaspoon
  13. Salt
  14. 1 pinch asafoetida (hing)
  15. Dhaniya / coriander leaf
  16. Ghee - 2 tsp


  1. First of all roast rava in ghee , keep on stirring, gives good aroma and colour
  2. Remove the rava in mixing bowl.
  3. In a same pan roast cashews, remove in mixing bowl .
  4. In a pan add oil curry leaves , chana dal astefoedia fry it.then add all this in rava mix.
  5. Add curd green chili and salt and mix it add water make a good consistently.
  6. Leave it for 30 min.
  7. after 20-30 minutes, if the batter looks thick, then add a few tablespoons of water to get a medium consistency. rava absorbs water and so the batter might thicken after 20 to 30 minutes
  8. heat water in a steamer, electric cooker or pressure cooker. just before steaming, add baking soda in the batter and mix well.
  9. pour the rava idli batter in greased idli moulds. place the idli stand in the electric cooker, steamer or pressure cooker.  steam the rava idlis for 10-12 minutes or more till a tooth pick inserted in the idlis come out clean.
  10. remove the instant rava idlis from the mould and serve the steaming hot rava idlis hot with idli podi or with your favorite coconut chutney and sambar.
