Horse gram clears the throat and the sinus. Its really very refreshing. Horsegram also aids in weight loss.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Horse Gram / Kollu – 1 cup
  2. Water – 3 cups
  3. Gingelly Oil – 1 tsp
  4. Garlic – 6 cloves
  5. Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam – 1 tsp
  6. Tomatoes – 1 large chopped
  7. Green Chillies – 1 slit
  8. Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi – 1 tsp
  9. Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
  10. Salt to taste
  11. Sugar – 1/2 tsp
  12. Tamarind Pulp – 2 tblspn
  13. Coriander Leaves a handful chopped finely
  14. For Seasoning: Oil – 1 tsp
  15. Mustard Seeds / Kaduku – 1/2 tsp
  16. Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam – 1/2 tsp
  17. Curry leaves – a sprig
  18. Hing – a pinch


  1. Wash and soak horse gram overnight in cold water. You can soak horse gram in boiling hot water for just 30 mins too..
  2. Take the drained horse gram in a pressure cooker. Cover with water and pressure cook till done.
  3. Once the horsegram is cooked, drain it. Reserve the liquid. You can use the cooked horsegram to make sundal.
  4. Take garlic and cumin in a blender and make it into a coarse mix. Heat oil in a sauce pan, add in the crushed garlic and cumin seeds. Saute for a min,
  5. Add in tomatoes and green chillies. Saute for 5 min or so. Now add in chilli and turmeric powder along with salt and sugar. Mix well.
  6. Add in tamarind pulp and the cooking water of horse gram. Add more water if needed.
  7. Mix everything really well and bring it to boil. once it starts to boil, turn off the heat and add in fresh coriander leaves and mix well.
  8. Now make the seasoning, by heating oil and add in all the seasoning ingredients. Let it sizzle for a min. Pour this over the rasam and mix well. Serve.
