ABOUT Steamed Fara RECIPE

Fara a traditional recipe from Varanasi is healthy as it is steamed. Fara can be made salty, sweet, plain or stuffed.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Rice flour (Chaval ka Atta) 5 Cup
  2. Split Bengal gram (Chana daal) 3 cup
  3. Split White Gram (White Urad daal) 1 cup
  4. Coriander leaves 1 bunch
  5. Green chillies 10
  6. Garlic cloves 8
  7. Dill 1 bunch
  8. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. For Filling:
  2. Wash and soak split Bengal gram and White gram for 3 hours.
  3. Grind both Grams separately without water. Grind Green chillies And Garlic together.
  4. Take a bowl, and add bengal gram and split white gram and the ginger-chilli paste. Add chopped dill, coriander leaves and salt. Mix well and keep aside. Filling is ready.
  5. Sieve the flour and salt together. Add warm water gradually and knead well to make a soft dough. Don’t add too much water. Knead for a while till the dough is quite smooth and keep aside for 15 minutes, covered with a damp muslin cloth.
  6. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll into balls. Roll out each portion into a 75 mm. (3″) diameter circle to make a fara wrapper.
  7. How to proceed:
  8. Place a fara wrapper on a flat dry surface and put 3 teaspoons of the filling in the centre.
  9. Tilt the fara wrapper from all sides as shown above in picture.
  10. Repeat with the remaining fara wrappers and filling to make 11 more fara.
  11. Arrange the fara in a steamer plate and steam for 10 minutes.
  12. Serve hot with green chutney.
