hariyalidal is a spicy prepration with spinach and lentils and served with steamed rice accompanied with fried papad and tomato salad

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. spinach 2cups
  2. split pigeon pea (tuvardal)1cup
  3. ginger garlic paste 1/2tsp
  4. onion finely chopped 1/4cup
  5. greenchilli 1
  6. salt to taste
  7. turmericpowder 1/4tsp
  8. redchilli powder 1tsp
  9. water 2cups
  10. oil 2tbsp
  11. for steamed rice
  12. Rice 1cup
  13. water 21/2cups
  14. salt to taste


  1. Soak split pigeon pea /tuvar dal for 10minuts
  2. Heat 1tsp of oil in a heavy bottom vessel add ginger garlic paste and saute
  3. Add soaked Dal and saute for 2-3minutes
  4. Add chopped green chilli and spinach in it mix well and cook
  5. Add chopped tomatoes in it and cook
  6. Add salt and turmeric powder in it
  7. Cook this mixture on medium flame till oil saperates
  8. Add water and close lid cook till water gets reduced and dal should be cooked properly
  9. Mash this cooked dal spinach mixture with a wooden ladle
  10. Not heat remaining oil in a tadka pan add redchilli powder and pour this tadka imidiately
  11. Hariyali dal is ready
  12. For steamed rice wash and soak rice for 5-6minutes
  13. Heat water in a vessel add salt in it
  14. As water starts boiling add soaked rice in it and cook on high flame
  15. As water get completly reduced close the lid to the vessel and cook on low flame for 4-5minutes then switch off the flame
  16. Serve hot steamed rice with hariyali dal,fried papad,pickle and salad
