This mildly tangy, flavourful rasam is a very good appetizer when you are down with fever. My mom gives me well-mashed rice with this rasam whenever I am sick and I always feel better

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Toor dal 1 tablespoon
  2. Lemon 1
  3. Tomato 1
  4. Green chillies 2
  5. Garlic 5 pods crushed
  6. Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon
  7. Salt accordingly
  8. Mustard seeds 1/2 teaspoon
  9. Oil 1 teaspoon
  10. Pepper powder 1/2 teaspoon
  11. Jeera powder 1 teaspoon
  12. Asafoetida a pinch
  13. Curry leaves few
  14. Coriander leaves for garnish


  1. Pressure cook toor dal for 5 whistles with 2 cups of water and turmeric powder.
  2. Add finely chopped tomato, crushed garlic, pepper powder, jeera powder to the dal water and add salt accordingly.
  3. In a tadka pan add little oil, add mustard seeds and once they splutter add slit green chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida.
  4. Pour the tempering into the dal water mix.
  5. Simmer it on a low flame till it becomes frothy. Do not let it boil
  6. Switch off from flame and and add finely chopped coriander leaves. Then squeeze a lemon after removing the seeds.
  7. You can have it like a soup or mix it with rice and eat
