ABOUT Amaranth leaves dal RECIPE

This is called as Molakeerai in Tamil and in Thotakoora in Telugu. A perfectly flavoured South Indian dish.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1 cup Amaranth leaves, washed and cut finely
  2. 1/4 cup toovar dal
  3. 1/4 cup masoor dal
  4. 2 green chillies
  5. 3 cloves garlic
  6. 1 onion cut
  7. 1 tomato, finely chopped
  8. 1/2 inch ginger, shredded
  9. 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  10. 1/2 tsp dhania powder
  11. A little asfoetida
  12. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  13. 2 tsp oil
  14. Mustard seeds, urad dal ,1 red chilli for Seasoning
  15. Few curry leaves and coriander leaves


  1. Soak the dals for 20 mins and cook it in a pressure cooker with turmeric till its soft. Then keep aside.
  2. Once again, take the cooker, add oil and the seasoning ingredients, mustard seeds, udad dal, red chilli, green chilli, asafoetida, curry leaves, onion, ginger, garlic and fry it.
  3. Then add the turmeric powder, along with the tomatoes. Finally add the amaranth leaves along with salt. Let it cook till one whistle blows.
  4. Now remove the lid, add the dals and check the salt. Let it simmer for 3 mins.
  5. Serve it warm.
