With Kerela's abundance of coconut, this traditional fish curry is cooked with coconut.

Fish Curry

Ingredients to make Fish Curry

  • 1/2kg Fish
  • 3 Brindleberry
  • 1 tbs chilli powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 6 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 6 shallots (small onions)
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • A few curry leaves
  • salt to taste

How to make Fish Curry

  1. Soak brindleberry in 2 cups of hot water along with some salt.
  2. Chop shallot, garlic and ginger into fine slices.
  3. Add chilli powder, turmeric powder and water to make a paste.
  4. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. When it splutters, add shallots, garlic and ginger.
  5. Saute till it turns golden brown.
  6. Reduce the heat, add the chilli-turmeric paste and stir well.
  7. Add the soaked brindleberry water and bring to boil.
  8. Now add the fish and salt to taste. Cook for 10-15 mins.
  9. Add coconut oil and curry leaves.
  10. Serve hot with steamed rice.
