ABOUT Prawn Aamto RECIPE

A sweet and sour accompaniment for a Goan meal made from raw mangoes, prawns and fresh grated coconut.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 2 raw mangoes
  2. 2 medium onions (finely chopped)
  3. 2 green chillies (slit lengthwise)
  4. 1 tsp roasted cumin powder
  5. 2 tbsp coriander powder
  6. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  7. 1 tbsp sugar
  8. 100 gms prawns/ shrimp (cleaned)
  9. 1 cup fresh grated coconut
  10. 4 tbsp oil
  11. salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and wash the mangoes. Cut into thin slices, leaving a little flesh around the seed. Apply salt and keep aside for half an hour
  2. Heat oil in a non stick pan and saute the onions till soft. Add the raw mangoes, turmeric powder, cumin powder and coriander powder. Saute.
  3. Add the grated coconut, prawns/ shrimp, slit green chillies, sugar and 2 cups water. Cover and cook on slow flame for about 5 minutes.
  4. After 5 minutes, stir once and check if more salt is required.
  5. Cover and cook for 15 minutes or till done.
