ABOUT Moong daal (Bengali Recipe) RECIPE

Traditional Bengali mungdal- This recipe is pure veg recipe without adding onions and garlic. Bengalies cooked mung dal basically in two ways 1. Bhaja munger dal or fried moong dal preparations and 2 kancha moonger dal or without frying the dal. In this recipe I add green peas and coconut with fried sona moong dal (small grained moong dal)

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Soma moong dal 1 cup
  2. Green peas (optional)-1/2 cup
  3. Minced ginger 1 teaspoon
  4. Very finely sliced then chopped coconut 1/4 cup
  5. Green cilli slits 2
  6. Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon full
  7. Bay leaf 1
  8. Salt and termaric as required
  9. Sugar 1 teaspoon
  10. Red cilli 1
  11. Mustard oil 1/2 table spoon
  12. Ghee 1 table spoon


  1. Wash moong dal
  2. Heat kadai and dry roast the dal then add termaric and green peas and pressure cook it or cook it in a covered container to boil.
  3. Heat mustard oil and add bay leaf and green cilli stir for a while and add mince ginger and fry.
  4. Add chopped coconut and fry.
  5. Add cooked moong dal with green peas, add Salt and Sugar and cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Heat ghee( for chhauk or tarka) add cumin seeds and a Whole Red cilli let them fry. When the fragrance appeared add it to the cooked moong dal. Spread all over and cover it with a lid.
  7. Leave it for about 5 minutes.
  8. Serve with Steamed rice brinjal or parwal fry and curry.
