ABOUT Upma RECIPE

Upma is a savory porridge made with semolina / rawa. It is a traditional south Indian breakfast dish and usually served with coconut chutney, peanut chutney or pickle.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 2 Cups semolina (sooji, rava)
  2. one onion
  3. 6 TBLSP Ghee
  4. 1/2 TSP Mustard Seeds (raai)
  5. 2 red chillies
  6. 2 tbsp split urad dal
  7. 10-12 curry leaves
  8. 1/4 tsp hing
  9. salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat ghee in a pan or kadai, temper with mustard seeds, red chilies, urad dal and curry leaves.
  2. Add the green chilies and stir.
  3. Add the onion cook for a few minutes. Add the cooked vegetables, sprinkle hing and salt to taste.
  4. Add rawa and fry till it changes its colour. Pour 4 cups water and bring to boil.
  5. When the water starts boiling, stir it continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
  6. Cook for a few more minutes stirring all the while. serve hot.
