ABOUT Gawar Chi Bhaji RECIPE

This is a traditional cluster beans curry which is both sweet and tangy. It is very common in many Maharashtrian household. It goes well with any Indian bread. The unique flavour in this dish comes from the use of goda masala, a typical Maharashtrian spice mix. This dish can be cooked with or without onion for a tasty variation. It is a simple and uncomplicated, purely vegetarian dish with a very mild and nutty flavour coming from the peanuts.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 250 gms. Gawar (cluster beans), chopped into 1" piece
  2. 1/2 tsp. mustard seeds
  3. 1/2 tsp. cumin seeds
  4. pinch of asafoetida
  5. 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  6. salt to taste
  7. 1/2 tsp. red chili powder
  8. 1 tbsp. roasted peanut powder
  9. 1 tbsp. fresh coconut, grated
  10. 1/2 tsp. amchur powder
  11. 1 tsp. jaggery/sugar
  12. 1/2 tsp. goda / garam masala
  13. 2 tbsp. oil

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook the beans in a steel container without any water for 2-3 whistles. (only the bottom of the cooker should contain water). Keep aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and temper with mustard seeds, cumin seeds and asafoetida. Add the beans, turmeric powder, red chili powder, goda masala, peanut powder, coconut, amchur, salt and sugar.
  3. Saute till all the masalas are well mixed for a couple of minutes on a low flame. Serve hot with chapattis or as a side dish with rice and dal (lentil).
