Langarwali Dal , a delicacy from Punjabi cuisine is simple to cook , tasty and loaded with nutrition . Soul comforting food which doesnt require any addition of butter or cream .

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Split black gram 1 cup
  2. Channa dal 1/2 cup
  3. water 3 cups
  4. cumin seeds 1.5 teaspoon
  5. turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon
  6. ginger grated 1 tablespoon
  7. tomato ripe big sized 1 finely chopped
  8. coriander powder 3/4 teaspoon
  9. Red chilli powder 1 teaspoon
  10. Green chilli 1 finely chopped
  11. salt 2 teaspoons or as prefered
  12. hing 1 teaspoon
  13. cilantros freshly chopped fistful
  14. ginger julienned 3/4 teaspoon
  15. ghee 3 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. Wash both the dals completely and soak them for 15 minutes.
  2. Drain the soaked dals and transfer to a heavy based cooking pot .
  3. Add 3 cups water and turmeric powder to the dal . Cover and cook until dal cooks 90%. This takes almost 50 minutes .
  4. Meantime , heat oil in a pan . Add cumin seeds and fry until they turn brown and bulge. Add in hing .
  5. Add the grated ginger and saute completely until raw smell leaves.
  6. Add the chopped tomatoes and saute until they turn pulpy.
  7. Add the dry powders and half the salt . Cook until masala oozes out .
  8. Add the prepared masala to the cooked dal . Mix and slow cook until masala and dal combines well . Dal should turn mushy . Add remaining salt .
  9. Add the chopped cilantros.
  10. Finally add the julinned ginger pieces.
  11. Langarwali Dal is ready . Serve hot with any flatbreads/ hot rice.
