Ingredients to make Arabic Oats and Meat Shurabah (soup)

  • 2 onions
  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • tomatoes / 1 cup tomato paste
  • 1 cup oats
  • 400 gm meat
  • 1 tbsp powdered pepper
  • salt to taste
  • 2 maggi seasoning cubes
  • 8-10 cups of water or accordingly .
  • 2 tbsp butter / vegetable oil/ olive oil
  • A few coriander leaves ; chopped
  • cinnamon sticks about 4
  • peppercorns about 12

How to make Arabic Oats and Meat Shurabah (soup)

  1. In a wide and deep cooking pot , heat butter or oil .
  2. Add cinnamon stick and peppercorns first. Next saute the onions and garlic for atleast 2 mins .
  3. Add rest of the ingredients now including water.
  4. Cover it with a lid and let it simmer on low flame for atleast an hour until the meat becomes tender and the soup gets thicker .
  5. The more the amount of oats added , the thicker the soup will get .
  6. For a change , you can also add any of your favourite veggies . Traditionally , it has nothing but meat and oats . But I do add some veggies always .
  7. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves .

My Tip:

We can also pressure cook the meat . But there will be a slight difference in the taste. Shurabah is made by letting the meat simmer on flame for about an hour during which the meat and the oats infuse their flavours together and they become nice and tender . Not only is it delicious , but it's also got the nutrients from the oats that many of us dislike . Because this soup has got the lightness of oats and the richness of meat , it is eaten while breaking a fast . It is a perfect combination and is also gentle on your digestive system .
