Kanda Poha is a very popular Maharashtrian breakfast dish. It is basically made using flattened rice or rice flakes. In Kanda Poha, beaten rice is soaked and sieved and cooked with a lot of chopped onions. A lot of variations can be made in the poha to make it more nutritious, spicy, colorful and tasty like adding different vegetables etc. The easy to make and easy to digest poha will always come to your rescue whenever you are in a hurry to fix some quick and healthy breakfast. The piping hot kanda poha, garnished with some fresh coriander leaves and a dash of lemon, accompanied with some Farson or some crunchy papad is a nice way to start your day with.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 1 cup thick poha
  2. 1 large onion finely chopped
  3. 1/4 tsp haldi powder
  4. 1 tsp mustard seed
  5. 1 tsp jeera
  6. 1 boiled potato diced
  7. 1/4 cup peanuts
  8. Curry leaves
  9. 1 tsp sugar
  10. 1 tablespoon oil
  11. Salt as per taste.
  12. 1 green chilli chopped
  13. Coriander finely chopped


  1. Rinse the poha in water till they soften.
  2. Now add sugar, turmeric powder and salt to the poha and gently mix
  3. Dry roast the peanuts in a pan till they become crunchy
  4. Heat oil in pan crackle the mustard seeds and jeera. Then add onion and sauté them till they become translucent. Then add curry leaves and green chillies and boiled potato sauté them. Add the peanuts and then add poha and stir .
  5. Cover and steam the poha for 2 minutes on a low flame..
  6. Remove the lid and sprinkle some lemon juice and coriander leaves. Kanda poha is ready to eat.
