ABOUT Meethi Dal(Sweet Lentils) RECIPE

One of the most popular breakfasts of Hyderabad. It is the simplest dal ever cooked. Not a single grain of sugar in it, but still is called meethi because it does not have even the least trace of red chili powder. It is made with just one or two green chilies chopped and hence least spicy. It is had almost every other day as breakfast along with simple roti in every Hydi hpusehold.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Red lentils (masoor dal) 1/2 cup
  2. Split green gram (moong dal) 1/2 cup
  3. Green chilies finely chopped 2
  4. Salt 1 tbsp
  5. Ginger garlic paste 1 tsp
  6. Onion medium sized sliced thinly 2
  7. Coriander leaves a handful
  8. Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  9. Oil or ghee 2-3 tbsp


  1. Soak both the dal for at least 2 hours.
  2. Next pressure cook the dal with salt and turmeric powder added to it for 6 to 7 whistles.
  3. Mean while heat oil or ghee in a pan.
  4. Add the sliced onions.
  5. Also, add the ginger garlic paste and the chopped green chilies.
  6. Saute them well on low flame only. Add coriander leaves also to it.
  7. Do not hurry while doing this. Saute it well on low to medium flame taking care not to burn it.
  8. This is almost done when the onions get a nice golden brown color. It takes almost 7 to 8 mins.
  9. Add this to the cooked dal and allow it to simmer for 5 - 8 mins on low flame.
  10. The Dal is done now with a nice aroma emanating in the kitchen.
  11. Serve it hot with roti or rice.
