Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1- medium sized raw mango
  2. 1 cup- toor dal
  3. 1- small sized onion
  4. 6- green chillies
  5. 1/2 tsp- chilli powder
  6. 1/4 tsp- turmeric powder
  7. salt to taste
  8. For Seasoning:
  9. 1/4 tsp- mustard seeds
  10. 1/2 tsp- urad dal
  11. 1/2 tsp- cumin seeds
  12. 4 cloves- garlic crushed
  13. A few curry leaves
  14. 2 tsp- oil


  1. Cut the mango into big cubes and chop the onion, also slit the green chillies.
  2. If you are going to cook it in a pressure cooker, wash the dal and add 1/2 cup of water with the onion, mango, chilli, turmeric chilli powder. Cover the cooker lid. Let it cook for 2 whistles then remove it from the heat and let it cool.
  3. If you are going to cook it in a pan, add 1 cup of water to the dal and let it cook till it's half done (the dal should split).
  4. Now add the chopped onion, green chillies, mango pieces and let them cook till they become soft. Then remove from the fire and mash the dal a little with a spoon and leave it aside.
  5. Heat oil in a pan, add the mustard seeds,cumin seeds, uard dal, crushed garlic, curry leaves and fry till they turn into a golden colour. Add this to the mango dal mixture and mix well.
  6. Serve it with hot steamed rice and potato stir fry/okra stir fry/ bitter gourd stir fry and sun dried curd chilies (ooramirapakaya).
