ABOUT Seeralam / Lenthil Upma RECIPE

This is traditional tamil nadu recipe which is not known to many. I bet you can relish every bite of upma. It is so tasty and very rich in protein. It is basically steamed lenthil which is roasted in oil with seasonings. I learnt this recipe from internet. This can be made healthy by adding vegetables.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Toor dal 1/4 cup
  2. Channa dal 1/4 cup
  3. Moong dal 1/4 cup
  4. Millets 1/2 cup
  5. Salt
  6. Turmeric
  7. Red chillies 5
  8. Green Chillies 1
  9. curry leaves
  10. Hing
  11. For seasoning oil
  12. Mustard

Instructions

  1. Take equal quantity (1/4 cup) of Tuvr dal, Channa dal, Moong dal and 1/2 cup Millets. In original recipe 1/4 cup Raw rice and 1/4 cup Idli rice are used. I have substituted rice with millets
  2. Rinse and soak lentils and Millets overnight
  3. Drain water and add them to blender. Add Turmeric powder, 2 TSP salt, hing and 5-6 red chillies. Grind to smooth paste
  4. Grease the steamer plate with oil
  5. Add lentil paste on greased plate
  6. Steam cook for 15 -20 mins
  7. Cool the lenthils cake
  8. Crumble the cake
  9. Heat oil. Add Mustard seeds
  10. When Mustard seeds cracks, add chopped green chillies and curry leaves. You can also add grated carrot/ beetroot / any vegetables to make it more healthy.
  11. Add crumbled lenthils
  12. Gently roast them on low flame for 5 mins
  13. Upma is ready to serve
