ABOUT Peas Pumpkin Dal RECIPE

This dal is an alternate to idli sambar i prepare at home. It is very tasty and sweet dal. Pumpkin adds sweetness to the dal. We love this dal with hot idlies and hot roti.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Sweet Pumpkin 500 gms cubed
  2. Moong dal 3/4 cup
  3. Peas 1/4 cup
  4. 4 small sized Onions chopped
  5. 1 Tomato chopped
  6. Ginger small piece
  7. 2 Green chilies chopped
  8. 1 dry Red chili broken
  9. 1 sprig curry leaves
  10. 3 tbsp chopped Coriander leaves
  11. Garlic 10 pods
  12. 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  13. For seasoning 2 tsp oil
  14. 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  15. 1/2 tsp Jeera
  16. 1/8 tsp Methi seeds

Instructions

  1. Rinse and boil 3/4 cup Moong dal in a separate vessel for better taste, alternatively pressure cook the dal
  2. Heat oil in a small pan. Splutter mustard seeds. Add Jeera and Methi.
  3. Saute Onion, Garlic, Ginger, Green chilies, red chilies in the order given until onions are translucent and raw aroma goes away
  4. Add Peas, Curry leaves and Turmeric powder. Mix well
  5. Add Pumpkin and salt. Mix well
  6. Add this mixture to boiling moong dal and mix well
  7. Add tomato and coriander leaves
  8. Cover with a lid and cook. Or Pressure cook for 3 whistles
  9. Stir occasionally to check if the pumpkin is cooked. Cook on low flame for 10 mins
  10. Serve hot with roti
