Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Snake gourd. 250 grams, chopped
  2. tur dal and green gram dal. 1/4 cup
  3. Sambar powder. 2 - 3 teaspoons
  4. Gingelly oil or Coconut oil. 5-6 teaspoons
  5. Salt to taste
  6. Turmeric powder. 1/4 teaspoon
  7. For grinding
  8. Peppercorns 1 1/2 teaspoons
  9. Cumin seeds. 1 teaspoon
  10. Urad dal. 1 tablespoon
  11. Chana dal. 1 teaspoon
  12. Dry red chilies. 4
  13. Grated coconut. 1 tablespoon
  14. For Tadka:
  15. Curry leaves. 1 - 2 sprigs
  16. Urad dal 1 teaspoon
  17. Cumin seeds. 1/2 teaspoon


  1. Pressure cook dals until very soft and mushy
  2. Add enough water to the vegetables in a pan. Add salt, turmeric powder and sambar powder. Mix well. Cook until veggies are tender
  3. Heat oil, add urad and channa dal, fry till slightly golden
  4. Add pepper, cumin and roast until aromatic
  5. Remove from heat and add grated coconut. Mix well
  6. Cool and grind mixture to a smooth paste.
  7. Add ground paste with the boiled dals to cooked veggies and mix well.
  8. Check for seasoning and bring to boil
  9. Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds
  10. Add urad dal and roast till golden. Add curry leaves and mix well
  11. Pour the tadka over the poricha koottu
  12. Serve hot over steamed rice topped with ghee.
