It is traditional antioxidant recipe with pepper flavour. Traditional Tamil nadu dishes uses pepper corns as main spices compared to red chillies for a healthy lifestyle

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Snake gourd 500 gms
  2. Toor dal 1/2 cup
  3. Turmeric 1/2 tsp
  4. Salt to taste
  5. For grinding Channa dal 1 tbsp
  6. Urad dal 1/2 tbsp
  7. Black pepper 1 Tbsp
  8. Jeera 1/2 tbsp
  9. Red Chilies 2
  10. 5-6 curry leaves
  11. For seasoning coconut oil- 2 tsp
  12. Mustard seeds 3/4 tsp
  13. Split Urad dal 1 tsp
  14. Hing - 1/8 tsp
  15. 6-7 curry leaves


  1. Pressure cook Snake gourd and 1/2 cup Toor dal for 6 whistles. Keep it aside
  2. In a kadai, heat coconut oil. Add 1 tbsp Channa dal, 1/2 tbsp Urad dal. Roast them. Then add 1 tbsp black pepper, 1/2 tbsp Jeera and 2 Red chilies. Add whole sprigs of curry leaves. Roast them. Cool the mixture completely. Grind to fine powder
  3. Add Turmeric and salt to dal. Mix well
  4. Add ground powder and water to dal. Cook for 5 minutes over medium heat
  5. Prepare seasoning with coconut oil, Mustard, Urad dal and curry leaves
  6. Add seasoning to dal and cook for 5 minutes on low flame
  7. Milagu Kootu ready to be served with rice
