Pepper cumin rasam is a spicy,tangy and hot appetizer drink made from tamarind,black pepper and cumin.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Ingredients to be ground coarsely:
  2. Black pepper whole 1/2 Tbsp
  3. Cumin seeds 1/2 Tbsp
  4. Dry Red chillies 2 No
  5. Garlic Cloves 6- 7No
  6. Ingredients for Rasam:
  7. Tarmarind soaked 1/2 Tbsp
  8. Warm water 1/2 cup
  9. Tomato chopped 1 medium
  10. Coriander leaves chopped 1/4 cup
  11. Water 1 - 1/2 cup
  12. Salt as per taste.
  13. Mustard seeds 1Tsp
  14. Turmeric 1/8Tsp
  15. Curry- patta 8-10 No
  16. Hing A pinch
  17. Oil 1-2 Tbsp


  1. Soak tamarind in the warm water for 30 minutes.
  2. After 30 minutes squeeze the soaked tamarind to get the pulp.
  3. Strain the pulp and keep aside.
  4. In a grinder add garlic cloves,red chillies,black pepper and cumin seeds.
  5. Grind coarsely.
  6. Heat oil in a pan,add mustard seed.
  7. When mustard seeds splutters add curry leaves and ground spices.
  8. Stir for a while ,then add turmeric powder,hing and chopped corriander leaves.
  9. Stir everything well.
  10. Add chopped tomatoes saute for few minutes.
  11. Then add tamarind pulp and water.
  12. Add salt as per taste.
  13. Stir and simmer on low medium flame for 10-15 minutes .
  14. Until tomatoes soften and the raw taste of tamarind goes away.
  15. Serve the pepper cumin rasam plain or accompanied with rice.
