ABOUT RASA VADA RECIPE

This is a South Indian dish... Vadas soaked in tangy rasam. Medhu vadas normally are made only from urad dal but today for a change I have also mixed yellow moong dal .

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. (Ingredients for Vadas:)
  2. Urad dal ... 1/2 cup
  3. Moong dal ... 1/2 cup
  4. Onion ....... 2-3 tbsps (finely chopped)
  5. Green chillies ... 1-2 (finely chopped)
  6. Coriander leaves .. handful
  7. Salt... to taste
  8. Baking powder ... a pinch
  9. Oil ..... to fry
  10. (Ingredients for Rasam)
  11. Boiled toor dal ... 1/4 cup
  12. Tamarind paste ... 2 tbsps
  13. Rasam powder .. 3-4 tsps
  14. Tomatoes ... 2
  15. Garlic .. 1 tsp (crushed) - optional
  16. Turmeric powder ... 1/4 tsp
  17. Red chilli powder ... 1/4 tsp
  18. Salt ... to taste
  19. Sugar or jaggery ....1 tsp to balance the taste
  20. Oil
  21. (For Tempering)
  22. Mustartd seeds .. 1 tsp
  23. Cumin seeds ..... 1/2 tsp
  24. Asafoetida ..... a pinch
  25. Dry red chillies .. 2-3
  26. Curry leaves ... 1 sprig

Instructions

  1. Soak dals for a few hours. Grind adding salt. Keep the consistency thick. Add very little water while grinding.
  2. Mix the baking powder, onion, green chillies, and coriander leaves.
  3. Heat oil and fry the vadas to a golden brown colour.
  4. Boil toor dal and mash it.
  5. In a pan add a little oil. Tip in the tempering ingredients.
  6. When they crackle, add the garlic and tomatoes.
  7. When they are soft add the mashed dal, rasam poader,turmeric powder, chilli powder, salt, jaggery. tamarind juice. Saute and add enough water and bring to a boil. Add coriander leaves.
  8. Simmer until done.
  9. Place the rasa vadas in a deep plate and pour hot steaming rasam on them.
