A traditional kerala dish . made almost in all houses of keralites. The main combination is chick pea curry. But nowadays people make different verieties of puttu & curries. It s really tasty even with some sugar.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Rice flour 1 cup. ( puttu rice flour is readily available in all shops)
  2. grated coconut 1 cup.
  3. jeera ( cumin) 2 pinch
  4. Salt
  5. water just to wet the flour.
  6. For the chickpea curry
  7. chickpea soaked 1 cup.
  8. Salt
  9. Turmeric 1/4 tsp
  10. Masala for frying
  11. oil 1tbsp
  12. Grated coconut 1 cup
  13. Small onion 3
  14. Red chillies 4 or 5
  15. Coriander powder 1/2 tsp
  16. For tempering
  17. sliced small onions 2 tsp
  18. Curry leaves a few
  19. Oil 2 tsp


  1. take the rice flour in a flat plate.
  2. add half of the coconut ,salt & jeera.
  3. mix well with hands.
  4. then sprinkle water a little by little .about the consistency of bread crumbs.
  5. heat a cooker with 1/4 filled with water.boil water.
  6. in a puttu maker 1st put some coconut , then add rice mixture .& on top fill with some more coconut.
  7. place on the cooker. steam for 5 min.
  8. For the curry
  9. boil chick pea with salt & turmeric in a pressure cooker.
  10. in a pan put 1 tbsp of oil & fry grated coconut , small onion & chillies. till coconut is golden brown.
  11. add coriander powder.stir for some more time.
  12. grind the roasted masala.
  13. add to the chick pea curry. add a little more water if needed. boil for sometime. remove when gravy is a little thick.
  14. in a small kadai add 2 tsp of oil. add sliced small onions & curry leaves. fry well. add to the curry.
  15. serve hot with puttu.
