  • 6 cardamom

  • few curry leaves
  • 3 big onion finely chopped
  • 3 big tomatoes finely chopped
  • 2 inch ginger crushed or finely chopped
  • 9 to 10 pod garlic crushed or finely chopped
  • 2 big tbsp red chilly paste
  • 1 big green chilly (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp vinegar (optionl)
  • 1 small pod of tamarind water
  • 2 Cups water
  • salt as per taste

How to make Mackerel Fish curry

  1. Wash mackerel. slice the fish and keep it aside
  2. Heat the oil in a deep pan put cardamom, clove and cinnamon.
  3. Saute garlic, ginger, curry leaves one by one until raw smell goes off.
  4. Fry onion till golden brown. Then add tomatoes.
  5. Once tomatoes are soft . Add red chilli paste. In 2 mints throw in turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder. Keep stirring it until the paste changes in color. (5 to 7 minutes)
  6. When its done you can see oil around wok and thats when its perfectly fried.
  7. Now pour 2 cups of water to it, or as much thick gravy you want (as required). Then add green chilly, vinegar, tamarind water and allow it to boil till oil floats.
  8. Add salt as per taste.
  9. Once the gravy comes to boil, start dropping the fish pieces and allow to boil for 15 minutes.
  10. Switch off the flame.
  11. Garnish with curry leaves.

My Tip:

- I prefer using non stick kadai (wok) - You can use fried onions too -You can also use coconut oil instead of normal oil. I use olive oil as its little healthier. - Adding garlic and ginger at beginning gives extra taste. Do not burn. - Too much tamarind water will ruin the taste. Adjust the tangy taste. - I prefer finely chopped ginger and garlic as it blends well and it gives a good taste when we eat it. -This recipe is made with any fish especially ladyfish, King fish , sardines, squid, prawns etc.. -Use fresh fish with slits in between for delicious taste. - I usually use mild green chilly in my food. You can also skip or add more as per you taste.. i prefer to use 1 mild green chilly . - i love using vinegar . You can skip it. -This recipe goes well with hot steam rice, boil rice, idlies, chillas.
