About Rajma... Kidney beans in thick gravy. Recipe

Rajma is a popular North Indian vegetarian dish consisting of red kidney beans in a thick gravy cooked with whole spices and usually served with rice.

Ingredients to make Rajma... Kidney beans in thick gravy.

  • Kidney beans 200 gms
  • 2 TBSP
  • onions 1 large
  • ginger and garlic paste 1 tsp each
  • tomatoes 2 medium size
  • Whole garam masala (2 green cardamoms, 2 cloves and an inch size piece of cinnamon stick
  • red chilli powder 1tsp
  • turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • cumin powder 1 /2 tsp
  • Garam masala powder 1 tsp
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves a handful
  • salt to taste

How to make Rajma... Kidney beans in thick gravy.

  1. Soak the rajma (kidney beans) for at least 6 hours
  2. Pressure cook with salt and whole garam masala for 15 minutes in low flame
  3. Make paste of onion.
  4. Chop tomatoes finely
  5. Heat oil add the onion and ginger garlic paste. Add all the powder masala and cook on low flame until it leaves oil.
  6. Add the chopped tomatoes and about half cup water. Mix well and let the tomatoes get mushy.
  7. Now add the cooked rajma and mix well. Check water add half cup more if required, cover and cook for 10 minutes. Check salt and garnish with coriander leaves.
  8. Serve with rice or roti.

My Tip:

Soak rajma overnight for best results.
