Ingredients to make Varagu upma

  • onion-1/2 cup, chopped
  • Green chilli- 1 slit
  • ginger- 1 inch piece
  • Varagu/ kodo millet- 1/2 cup
  • Green peas- 1 cup
  • Grated coconut -3 tbsp
  • water- 1 cup
  • salt as needed
  • water-1 cup
  • mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • black gram dal 1 tsp
  • cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • oil 2 tbsp
  • hing- a pinch
  • curry leaves 1 sprig

How to make Varagu upma

  1. Wash the millet and soak it for 20 to 30 mins, then drain the water and keep it aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add the mustard seeds, when it splutters, add the urad dal, red chillies and hing.
  3. When the dal turns golden brown, add the finely chopped onions, green chilli, ginger, curry leaves, green peas and saute until the onions turn transparent.
  4. Add 1 cup of water and salt. When the water starts boiling, lower the heat and add the millets while stirring continuously. Cover and cook on a low heat while stirring from time to time.
  5. Serve hot with any chutney of your choice.
