Poriyals can be made with any vegetable and is typically very Indian, from south of India; to be precise. They are mildly spiced with fragrant curry leaves and finished with grated coconut making it flavourful. Here’s a healthy cabbage poriyal recipe

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1 small cabbage
  2. 1/2 small coconut finely grated
  3. salt to taste
  4. 2 dry red chillies broken
  5. 1.5 tspn black mustard seeds
  6. 1.5 tspn split black gram
  7. Handful of fresh curry leaves
  8. 4 tbspn coconut oil
  9. 1 large green chilli slit


  1. Chop the cabbage finely(preferably lengthwise). wash and pat dry
  2. heat oil in a wok and temper with dry red chilli, green chilli, mustard seeds, black gram and curry leaves
  3. As the seeds splutter and you get the nutty aroma from the gram, add the cabbage
  4. Give it a good mix
  5. Add salt to taste and ginger paste
  6. Mix well and cook covered on Low heat until cabbage soften a bit without adding water
  7. Take off heat and add the coconut and mix well
  8. serve warm with steamed rice and sambhar
