this is a typical odiya dish made only on the occasion of prathamastami..it is made of using newly harvested rice and cooked in turmeric leaf and is steamed ..the flavour and the medicinal properties of turmeric leaf heal many bacteria in your body..it's unique flavour and taste puts it class apart

Ingredients Serving: 8

  1. urad dal 2 cups
  2. rice 3 cups
  3. grated coconut 1 cup
  4. chhena or freshly made paneer at home 1 cup
  5. sugar 1 cup
  6. turmeric leaves 8-10
  7. salt
  8. cardamom powder 1/2 tsp


  1. soak the urad dal and rice for at least 4 hours
  2. wash and grind into a coarse paste like idli batter..check consistency..
  3. add salt and keep it covered overnight for fermentation
  4. in the morning wash the turmeric leaves well and cut each leaf into 3 pieces as they r very long
  5. for the stuffings take a pan..add the chhena,coconut and sugar and dry roast them till sugar becomes caramelised ..add cardamom powder and the filling is ready
  6. take a turmeric leaf..place some fermented batter in the centre and some filling over that and close the leaf...
  7. likewise do all the pitha and steam it in a steamer for 15 mins...
  8. remove the leaf and enjoy the delicious pitha with chana curry or we say it ghughuni...
