Hyderabadi Dal gosht, as the name says, is a popular Indian dish native to Hyderabad. The royal recipe and Hyderabadi favorite is relished with love by non-vegetarians and contains mutton along with daal.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. 1 cup of toor dal (split yellow lentil )
  2. 1/2 cup of masoor dal (red split lentil )
  3. 1/2 kg of mutton
  4. 3 tbsp of ginger garlic paste
  5. 2 tsp red chilli powder
  6. 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder
  7. 1 tsp of coriander powder
  8. 3 medium chopped tomatoes
  9. 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  10. 3 sliced onions
  11. 3-4 slit green chillies
  12. Salt to taste
  13. 3 tbsp of oil
  14. 1 cup of diced lauki (bottle gourd)
  15. 2 tsp of lemon juice or tamarind pulp
  16. Whole garam masala for tempering (bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon stick, star anise, black pepper)
  17. Finely chopped coriander and mint leaves for garnishing


  1. Boil dal together with salt and turmeric pwd in a pressure cooker. In another pressure cooker heat oil and add sliced onions to it, fry till it is golden, then add ginger garlic paste, tomatoes and saute.
  2. Add mutton pieces to it and fry. Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder to it and fry for sometime till the oil separates. Add salt to taste, lauki and pressure cook it till the meat is soft.
  3. Once the meat is done mix it with whisked dal and cook well together.
  4. Add garam masala powder and lime juice to it.
  5. In a small pan, heat oil and add whole masala for tempering. Add this to the dal gosht mixture.
  6. Cook well. Garnish it with chopped coriander and mint leaves.
