Upma Kozhukattai With Gotsu

Ingredients to make Upma Kozhukattai With Gotsu

  • 2 Cups - Raw rice
  • curry leaves - 1 bunch
  • Dried red chilies - 4-6
  • 2 Cups - Chopped onions
  • 1 Cup - Chopped tomatoes
  • 4 - Small brinjals
  • 1 - Green chilli
  • 4-5 Cups - water
  • salt to taste
  • 3tsp - Channa dal
  • 4 tsp - coriander seeds
  • Pinch of hing
  • 1 Cup - Chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 Cup - oil
  • 2 tsp- Urad dal and mustard seeds
  • 2 tbp - tamarind

How to make Upma Kozhukattai With Gotsu

  1. Coarsely grind the rice.
  2. Heat a tempering pan and add oil, urad dal, mustard and channa dal. When they brown a little then add 3 dried red chilies and sauté. Add 5 cups of water and salt.
  3. When water begins to boil add the coarse rice powder and cook for 2-3 minutes. At this stage rice will absorb water and you will get a kichdi like consistency.
  4. Cool down the mix for a bit then apply oil on the both palms to make round balls of this mixture.
  5. Take a idli cooker and cook these balls or kozhukattais for 10 minutes.
  6. For the gotsu take a pan and add oil
  7. Add the tempering then add chopped onions and sauté for 5 minutes, Add the tomatoes and saute. Add turmeric powder, chopped brinjals and sauté for 10 minutes.
  8. While this is cooking dry roast dania, channa dal and dry chilies and make a powder. Add this to the gotsu and when it boils add salt, sliced chilies. Eat the upma Kozhukattai with gotsu.
  9. Add tamarind paste and top with coriander leaves. Gotsu is ready to serve.

My Tip:

Adding a bit of coconut to the Kozhukattai makes the Kozhukattai even tastier.
