Instructions

  1. Mix both the toor and chana dal together and wash it well. Then soak it in 2 cups of water for 30 mins.
  2. Fry all the masala ingredients together one by one till they turn into a light golden colour and give a nice aroma. (except for the asafoetida)
  3. Next, add asafoetida and set aside to cool, then grind into a fine powder and set aside. Also extract thick pulp from the soaked tamarind and set aside.
  4. Now start cooking the dal, when the dal is fully cooked, add the drumstick pieces (we are not going to mash this dal, so keep on cooking by adding all the other ingredients one by one).
  5. When the drumstick pieces are half cooked, add the tamarind pulp, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt to taste. Here If needed, you can add 1/2 cup water and keep on stirring gently, note that the drumstick pieces should not break.
  6. Cook for 5 more minutes, then add the onion and tomato pieces, slit the green chillies, give it a good stir and cook for 5 more minutes.
  7. Now add the curry leaves, ground masala, jaggery, mix it well and cook for 2 minutes.
  8. Heat oil, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dry red chillies, asafoetida and add this tadka to the munakkaya pappu (drumstick dal).
  9. Serve it with hot steamed rice, ghee and pappad.
