ABOUT Hush puppies (A north American Cuisine with an Indian touch) RECIPE

A Hush puppy is a deep fried Savory ball made by using mainly Cornmeal. Here I have added lentil flour, boiled Corn, grated Potato and grated Carrot to it. The name ia mainly attributed to hunters, fisherman or other cooks who would fry some basic Cornmeal mixture. Hush puppies are frequently served as a side dish with Seafood and other fried foods.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Cornmeal 1 1/2 cup
  2. Wheat flour 1 /2 cup
  3. Lentil daal ( masoor daal washed, dried and ground fine) 1/2 cup
  4. Sugar 2 tbsp ( optional, I have not added as I am adding sweet corn)
  5. Boiled sweet corn 1/2 cup
  6. Carrot grated 1/4 cup
  7. Grated Potato 1.
  8. Buttermilk 1/2 cup
  9. Baking soda 1 /2 tsp
  10. Egg 1
  11. Salt 1 tsp ( to taste)
  12. Cayenne 1 tsp
  13. Pepper powder 1 tsp ( optional)
  14. Ginger grated 1 tsp
  15. Onion chopped fine 2
  16. Oil for deep frying.

Instructions

  1. Mix Cornmeal, wheat flour and lentil flour.
  2. Add boiled sweet Corn and Carrot.
  3. Add grated potato too.
  4. Beat egg and add to the flour mixture.
  5. Add cayenne, pepper and ginger. Add chopped Onion too.
  6. Make batter by adding buttermilk. . Heat 2 tsp oil. Add baking soda to it and add.
  7. Adjust salt. Heat oil in a pan and drop Hush puppy one at a time with a spoon.
  8. Dip the spoon in water every time after putting a hush puppy in hot oil.
  9. Fry on a low medium flame. Enjoy with your favorite vegetable gravy.
  10. You can eat it as a snack also with a cup of hot coffee / tea.
