Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A good dietitian or good nutritionist, will always emphasize the importance of having a good breakfast every morning.
However, many people tend to skip their morning breakfasts or they tend to have breakfast on-the-go. Since the breakfast is the first proper meal of the day, not having breakfast can have an adverse effect on the body.
1) Low Cognitive Functioning
Your body needs three proper meals throughout the day. Even if you skip one meal, your brain is unable to function properly. As a result of this you tend to lose focus. The brain primarily runs on glucose-glucose is the energy source for the brain. Skipping breakfast on a daily basis leads to lower blood glucose levels, owing to which you feel tired and distracted throughout the day.
2) Mood, Energy Levels and Stress
Since food is converted into energy by the body, skipping breakfast can affect our mood and energy levels. The fall in the level of the blood sugar can lead to mood swings, which can make you feel annoyed and irritable throughout the day. An irritable mood, coupled with low energy levels can put undue stress on your body and your mind.
3) Gain in Weight
Not having your breakfast in the morning can actually make you gain weight. When the body is running on an empty stomach, it often craves for sugary and fatty foods. Initially, you may be able to ignore your rumbling stomach, but over the course of the day these hunger pangs will increase in intensity. The more hungry you feel, the more food you will have and this will inevitably add to your weight.
4) Heart Health
People who skip breakfast are putting themselves at a higher risk of contracting heart disease. In fact, the people who make it a point to have a proper breakfast every morning are actually lowering their risk of contracting heart disease! When you do not feed your body properly, you are actually making your body increasingly susceptible to problems such as hypertension, clogged arteries and chronic cardiovascular diseases.
5) Higher Risk of Cancer
Skipping breakfast can cause you to overindulge in unhealthy foods later on in the day. These unhealthy foods make you obese, and research has shown that overweight and obese people are at a higher risk of developing cancer.
6) Higher Risk of Diabetes
A strong correlation has been found between eating habits and health. People who do not have breakfast in the morning tend to be at a higher risk of developing type-2 diabetes because of the low levels of blood sugar in the body. Having a proper breakfast helps to regulate the blood sugar levels in the body in a healthy way, so it is imperative to have this meal every morning.
When you are sleeping at night, you are generally fasting for 7-8 hours. As mentioned before, skipping breakfast can cause a dip in the blood sugar levels of the body. This dip triggers the release of the hormones that compensate for the low glucose levels in the body. The combination of hunger and low blood sugar levels, can easily lead to a full-blown headache and/or a migraine.
After 7-8 hours of fasting while you are sleeping, breakfast is the first meal of the day! It is the one meal that boosts your metabolism every morning. If you leave the house without having breakfast your body will be unable to kick-start itself in the morning, which will inevitably lead to low metabolism and low energy levels throughout the day. In fact, research has shown that people who eat their breakfast regularly have higher levels of resting metabolism.
9) Hair Loss
Hair is the crowning glory of every woman, but did you know that skipping your breakfast can actually lead to hair loss? The food that we eat provides nutrition and energy to different parts of the body. If your rob your body of this nutrition by skipping breakfast, your hair will naturally get affected. What you eat for breakfast has a major impact on the growth of the hair follicles. Regularly skipping this meal can lead to hair loss.
The aforementioned consequences of skipping breakfast clearly show why breakfast is considered to be the most important meal of the day. Even if it means that you have to wake up earlier in the morning, make it a point to always have your breakfast before leaving the house for work or before starting your chores for the day.
