Keep your Lungs Healthy with these 7 Foods!

Lungs are the primary respiratory organ of our body. It is through them that we are able to breathe. Consequently, lungs are responsible for extracting oxygen from the atmosphere and transferring it into our bloodstream. Therefore, it becomes critically important to keep our lungs healthy and eating a healthy diet can be the best way to achieve this. Following a healthy diet is a long-term investment for better health.

There are some foods in particular which are great for lung health. We share with you a list of foods that can help to maintain the health of your lungs: 


1) Garlic

Nutritionists suggest that consuming garlic can help prevent any kind of inflammatory problems, including lung problems. Studies show that including garlic in the diet of a patient suffering from asthma can help to improve their condition and reduce the risk of lung cancer.

2) Flax Seeds

Omega-3 fatty acids and Magnesium are some of the essential nutrients that are required by the lungs. Flax seeds are a great source of obtaining them naturally,  without having to consume supplements. 10 grams of flaxseed can provide you with 39.2 mg of magnesium and 2.21 grams of omega-3-fats, which is about 10% of the daily nutritional requirement. These nutrients also help to prevent breathing problems such as Asthma.


3) Apples

Apples contain various vitamins, flavonoids and khellin that can help to maintain a healthy respiratory system,  which can in turn help to prevent the development of different lung diseases. A recent study shows that a good lung function is associated with a high consumption of vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene.  Furthermore, consuming apples daily can also help to reduce the risk of asthma by up to 32%.


4) Spinach

Spinach contains a powerful antioxidant named ‘kaempferol’,  which is known to decrease the effects of inflammation-causing agents. Spinach is also a good natural source of beta-carotene-another useful antioxidant that helps to protect lungs.


5) Ginger

Ginger helps to cure breathing problems because of its anti-inflammatory properties. As it is a widely used herb, you can consume ginger by easily mixing it into various dishes. You don’t need to consume it raw. Ginger tea, blended with lemon helps to provide relief from breathing problems by removing toxins from the respiratory tract.


6) Walnuts

Walnuts are another good source of vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids. Vitamin E has been proven to be effective in fighting lung cancer. Along with protecting the lining of the lungs and preventing infection, the vitamin can also help to reduce asthma. According to various studies, consuming walnuts regularly can help you fight asthma other respiratory ailments.


7) Broccoli

Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables contain a compound called sulforaphane, which can lower the rate of progression of cancer cells. This high-antioxidant green vegetable is believed to be one of the best green vegetables for keeping lungs healthy, especially in patients with a chronic obstructive pulmonary dysfunction.
