Is It Safe To Eat Expired Eggs?

Are you scared of eating an egg past its expiration date and wondering if it can make you sick? What do you do in such a situation? Well, we are here to put your concerns at bay by helping you do a small test.

Sometimes eating expired eggs could cause no harm and should cause no concern. However, if an egg has been spoiled or contaminated with the bacteria like Salmonella eating them could lead to unhealthy consequences. These bacteria known as Salmonella are the major causes of foodborne illnesses such as fever, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea.

If the idea of eating an expired egg make you freak out, here is a small test that can tell you if it’s in the edible state. Simply fill a large pitcher or glass with water. Gently release the egg into the water. If the egg sinks, it’s still good. If it floats, it’s old and should not be eaten. 

Another good way to avoid getting sick from eating eggs that may contain harmful bacteria is to cook your eggs properly and not consume them raw or partially cooked. These said bacteria have a higher probability of infecting young children, older adults, and people with ongoing illnesses. So it is advisable to make sure they do not consume expired, spoiled, or raw eggs.

Nevertheless, the expiration date alone does not determine if the eggs are spoiled. If you have taken the necessary precautions, such as storing them in a refrigerator, chances are they haven’t gone bad even after a few days or weeks of the expiration date. One way to know if the egg has been spoiled is by its smell. Eggs, cooked or raw, will have a strong foul smell once you crack them open. Other signs such as discoloration of the yolk or the mold. However, if you fail to detect any of these signs and still feel unsure about it, better to just go with the safer option and throw them away.

Always remember to wash the eggs thoroughly and store them in the refrigerator to keep them safe and away from bacteria.
