India is a land of food! The 29 states contribute to our wide range of food cuisines, where each state has something to offer completely different from the other state. Indians love food more than anything else. With Indian cuisine becoming famous globally, some of the Hollywood stars have also declared their love for the Indian food. But we are not as aware of our food history as we thought ourselves to be! So, here is a list of Indian food secrets that you would have never imagined!

  1. Samosas:

Indians love the combination of chai and samosas. We need an excuse to eat samosas and there is even a Bollywood song dedicated to it. But here is a shocker, samosas are not originally from India. It originated in the Middle East.

 India is truly the land of spices as it produces more varieties of spices as compared to other countries. It produces 70% of the total range of spices produced in the world.

Who knew that tomato and potato did not originate in India? Yes, that’s right. The Portuguese introduced India to these fine staples.

Indians used to use fruits and honey as sweeteners while preparing Indian Food. It was the Portuguese again who introduced us to refined sugar.

Every non-vegetarian in India knows what Chicken Tikka Masala means to them. One of the most amazing non-vegetarian dishes in India was actually invented in Glasgow, Scotland

The general misconception about Indian food is that it is always spicy. Well, according to food theory, Indian food is made up of six different flavours- sweet, sour, pungent, bitter, astringent and salty.

7..Hottest Chilli or Ghost Pepper:

The hottest chilli popularly known as Ghost Pepper is grown in India and is estimated to be 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce.

8. Candy:


The crystallization of sugar from sugarcane juice first began in India, and became a widespread practice by the 5th century. It was known as khanda from where the English word ‘candy’ has been derived.
