Is food addiction real?

Time and again, various studies and researches have proved the fact that food addiction is real and it is quite difficult to get rid of it. In this post, we’ll discover some signs of food addiction, its reasons and ways to get out of it.      

What is food addiction?

It happens with many of us that we want to avoid junk food or other unhealthy food items but we cannot do so despite being well aware of its ill consequences. This is a kind of food addiction.

In simpler words, food addiction is caused when a person’s brain is addicted to certain food products. There are certain food items that have a mark on our brain. So, they give us satisfaction and we cannot avoid them. Food addiction mostly happens in the case of junk food which leads to over-eating and obesity.

Reason behind food addiction

There are various reasons that cause food addiction but the most prominent reason is ‘stress. It is rightly said that ‘a healthy mind leads to a healthy body ’. Thus, if you are facing any psychological problem, then you are likely to experience food addiction. Other psychological reasons behind food addiction are a child or sexual abuse, experiencing traumatic situations, peer pressure and other social factors.

Signs of food addiction

There are different signs of food addiction. If you experience any of these, then you are a food addict:  

  • An urge to eat again and again even if the stomach is full.
  • Eating certain food items regularly despite knowing about their negative effects.
  • Eating more than you thought you would.
  • Over-eating to a point when you start feeling ill.
  • Facing digestive problems for a long time.
  • Sleeping disorders.
  • Eating secretly while hiding from others.
  • Fatigue.

Remedies to overcome food addiction

Food addiction can result in many harmful diseases and conditions such as coronary heart disease, obesity, depression, panic attacks, etc. Thus, getting out of the trap of food is imperative. For this, you must consult a psychologist or a nutritionist as per your needs.

If you think that you are facing more of psychological problems such as sleep disorders, anxiety, panic attacks or feeling numb, suicidal isolation, etc, thereby causing food addiction, then you must consult a psychologist.

If you are experiencing other effects of food addiction such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart problems, etc then you must consult a nutritionist.
