Kidney Stones- Symptoms, Causes & Home Remedies

Kidney stones are very common and they occur more often in men than in women. Though it is not a life-threatening disease, proper care and treatment is a must as the pain might be unbearable. Stones are small crystalline structures consisting of acid salts and other components like oxalate and phosphate, that  vary in size and texture. These might go unnoticed until they create a blockage in the ureter which then causes extreme pain.

So here are all the details regarding the symptoms, causes and ways to treat a kidney stone.

A kidney stone is not obviously shown in the beginning until it starts to move to the ureter causing pain. You might face chills with fever due to infection, quantity of urine passed is less, might face a burning sensation while you urinate, vomiting, blood in the urine, nausea, extreme lower back and abdominal pain, severe pain in the groin area, and the urge to urinate immediately, are major symptoms of kidney stones.

There is no specific reason as to why a kidney stone occurs in one’s body. There are various causes of this. Not consuming enough water on daily basis, having a high protein or sugar included in your diet, a bypass surgery, obesity, intestinal surgery, due to family history, certain kidney disorders or polycystic kidney disease, urinary tract infection, and  consumption of pills such as diuretics are a few reasons why a person might end up with a stone in their kidney.

Kidney stones need to be treated in a timely manner in order to get rid of the pain and to allow the urine to flow out of the body.  You can initially try using the home remedies below to treat Kidney stones.

1) Basil Juice

Basil contains various compounds such as acetic acid that help to break down and dissolve the kidney stones. It also contains compounds that prevent the formation of stones. Drinking a teaspoon of basil extract every day helps to prevent stone formation.

2) Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate juice possesses antioxidant and astringent properties, which not only prevent stone formation but also help to ease their passage. Eating pomegranate seeds or having its juice helps to reap these benefits from the fruit.

3) Dandelion Root Juice

Dandelions help to increase bile production and thus aid in eliminating waste from the body. Consuming 3-4 cups of dandelion tea every day helps to prevent stone formation.

4) Celery Juice

Consuming celery on a regular basis helps to increase the production of urine and prevents stone formation. Consuming 1 glass of celery juice every day helps to prevent stone formation in the kidney.

5) Wheatgrass Juice

Wheat grass helps to increase the production of urine and this allows stones to pass easily. The antioxidants in wheat grass help to eliminate salts and minerals from the urinary tract. Drinking 1-2 glasses of wheat grass juice every day helps to get rid of stones.

If that doesn’t help, you can reach out to your doctor for certain medications like Tamsulosin which eases the ureter and allows the stone to pass by easily. Additionally, you can also follow certain painkillers and anti-nausea medicines, which allow the stone to pass through. But if this doesn’t work due to the size or texture of the stone which might be hard to release, then a surgery is a must.
