Have you wondered why your skin loses its radiance suddenly when there is a  change in the weather? Well, your skin calls for a variation in treatment, just like how you keep changing your outfits over every season! Yes, following a proper and customized skincare routine according to your skin texture is the trick towards glowing skin. Besides this, you also need to follow a healthy diet for a healthy skin from within.

As we are moving from monsoon to winter, it is such a struggle to take care of your skin to maintain its moisture. Though winter brings in a lot of joy with Christmas and holidaying out, there is a dip in humidity, with no proper exposure to the sun. This can ruin your complexion very soon by making it dull. In addition to this, with the dry air and cold breeze outside, your skin gets irritated, is prone to blemishes and cracks which just makes things worse for you.

Wondering what you need to do? Here are a few quick tips on how to take care of your skin in this intense cold weather:

1) Moisturize

Soon after your bath, lock your skin from becoming dry soon with a proper moisturizer. Go for those lotions and moisturizers that will help in reducing wrinkles and tighten your skin. You can also try essential oils in order to rejuvenate your skin cells. Apply these creams overnight on your elbows, hands and other areas where the skin seems thinner. This will lock the moisture content and protect your skin.

  • Moisturizer to try: Aloe vera, petroleum jelly or coconut oil works as the best moisturizer.

2) Shower

Though hot water showers might make you feel good and comfortable in the cold weather, it is only temporary. It will further damage your skin layers, leading to cracks and bleeding. Take a short warm water shower as overexposure to hot water might damage the skin cells in winter.

3) Exfoliate

Do not exfoliate your skin more often that required in winter as it might change the skin color making it look dull due to a dip in the humidity. Having said that, exfoliating is essential even in winter in order to get rid of dead cells.

  • Cleanser / Exfoliator to try: Lemon with honey and sugar or coffee powder works great.

4) Face Pack

Instead of picking some cold cream and body lotions as always during winter, try face packs at home. Applying a face pack will undoubtedly rejuvenate your skin cells. Mix yogurt and buttermilk in equal proportions and apply on your face and wherever you feel is necessary on your body. Allow it to rest for 10-15 minutes and wash away. As yogurt is rich in zinc and calcium it helps in soothing your skin from blemishes and buttermilk aids in brightening your dull skin during winter as it is filled with lactic acid.

Other home-based face packs to try include:

  • Banana mask
  • Papaya mask
  • Milk and almond mask
  • Coconut oil massage
  • Milk and honey mask

5) Lip Care

Use a lip balm that provides enough moisture to lips. Use lipsticks that are high in SPF (sun protection factor) as the UV rays from the sun seem are very strong in winter.

  • Lip balm to try: Butter your lips instead of your daily toast. Don’t lick it!

6) Protect your Skin

Wear gloves soon after you apply your overnight moisturizer. And wear scarves or face masks and socks whenever you step out in the cold weather. This will protect your soft skin from cracks due to the dryness in the air.
