Urinary retention is an issue that occurs when you are unable to empty your bladder successfully. Though this can happen to anyone, elderly people are more prone to the problem of urinary retention. Since you are not able to empty your bladder, it can lead to pain and make you feel very uncomfortable.

Types of Urinary Retention

There are two types of urinary retention:

  • Intense Urinary Retention: This type of retention occurs suddenly for a short period of time. This type of retention can even prove to be fatal because in this state, though your bladder is full, you are still unable to empty your bladder successfully.
  • Long-Term Urinary Retention: This kind of urinary retention is a long-term problem. The person is able to pass urine, but the bladder is still not emptied completely.

These are the symptoms of Intense Urinary Retention:

  • Pain in the lower part of the abdomen
  • Bloating
  • Intense need to pass urine
  • Inability to empty the bladder

These are the symptoms of Long-term Urinary Retention:

  • Excessive pressure on your stomach
  • Stomachache
  • Need to pass urine repeatedly
  • Problems in emptying your bladder completely

Home Remedies to Treat Urinary Retention

If urinary retention is not treated at the right time, it can lead to serious problems such as intense pain and discomfort. Sometimes, urinary retention can even prove to be fatal! Apart from the home remedies given below, do consult your doctor for this:

Medicines to Prevent the Growth of the Prostate

The main reason for urinary retention is the growth of the prostate. Owing to this, many men tend to suffer from this problem. Certain medicines can help to prevent the growth of the prostate. These medicines include Alpha Blockers-Alufozosin, Doxazosin, Silodosin and Tamsulosin and 5 Alpha reduction inhibitors-Finesteride and Dutasteride.

NOTE: Consult a doctor before taking any of these medicines.

Bladder retention can even be caused due to the swelling of the bladder. Along with the medicines prescribed by the doctor and the necessary treatment, painkillers can also help you get relief from the intense pain in your stomach. The doctor can prescribe either Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen for the pain.

Mint Oil

Mint oil helps to reduce pain and is considered to be naturally effective at treating bladder-related disorders. To make sure that you are able to pass urine successfully, add a few drops of mint oil onto the toilet seat. When you sit on the toilet seat, the vapors from the mint oil will come in contact with your body, and this could make it easier for you to pass urine.

Dandelion is a flower that is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Since ancient times, dandelion has been used to treat indigestion and kidney-related diseases. Drinking dandelion tea twice a day can provide some relief from urinary retention.

Shwet Parpatti

Shwet Parpatti is an Ayurvedic medicine that is easily available in the market. This medicine helps to regularise the passing of urine and emptying the bladder. Take 1 gram shwet parpati and mix it with either honey or warm water. Consume this at least thrice a day and you’ll get a simple solution to the problem of urinary retention.
